A system crash screen, often known as a blue screen of death (BSoD) after the famous blue and white error screen Microsoft Windows showed from 1985 up until July 2025, is a sign that something has gone wrong with your computer’s operating system and it cannot continue.

Officially known as a stop error, a blue screen of death is usually a sign that something significant has happened that has affected your computer’s ability to function, and the only way to fix it is to restart the operating system and try again.

System crash screens are disruptive, frustrating and sometimes quite scary, especially if they are accompanied by sudden noises, strongly worded warnings and suggestions that your home or business computer may need to be repaired.

In many cases, it is not that serious, although a BSoD or similar crash screens such as the spinning pinwheel of death on Apple macOS, a kernel panic in Linux or Guru Meditation on some websites can indicate potential issues with your settings, files or hardware that you need to address.

What Causes System Crash Screens?

A system crash screen typically occurs due to a change to either the physical hardware of the computer, the core software files the operating system needs to run, or the drivers which connect the former to the latter.

Whilst annoying, they are not always serious; rather infamously, a BSoD happened during a promotional event for Windows 98 when trying to plug in a printer.

The most common causes for system crash screens include:

  • Incompatible Drivers – If the code that connects the hardware components to your software is old, incompatible or poorly coded, it can make the operating system unstable.
  • Overheating – Hot computers tend to misbehave and whilst a thermal shutdown is more common, sometimes it can cause a system crash screen.
  • Corrupted Core OS Files – If a virus, an incomplete system update or poorly handled settings change damages files the computer needs to run securely, it can crash.
  • Hardware Problems – Faulty or poorly connected hard drives, graphics cards and RAM can trigger a BSoD if Windows tries to access something that it cannot find.
