Speeding Up Your Slow Computer – A Digital Doctors Guide

Is your computer feeling more like a tortoise than a hare these days? Don't let a sluggish machine slow down your productivity. We've got your back with some expert tips to speed up your slow computer and get it running like new!

1. Clean Up Your Digital Clutter:

  • Over time, your computer accumulates unnecessary files that can weigh it down. Use disk cleanup tools to clear out temporary files, caches, and old downloads. This not only frees up space but also helps your computer operate more efficiently.

2. Manage Startup Programs:

  • A long list of startup programs can significantly impact your computer's boot time. Review and disable unnecessary startup applications to streamline the startup process and get to work faster.
  • To disable certain start-up applications: Head to Settings > Apps > Startup. There will be a list of the applications that load when you turn on your computer, you can turn them off from this area using the slider on the right side of the application you’d like to disable.

3. Update Your Operating System:

  • Keeping your operating system up-to-date is crucial for optimal performance. Regular updates often include performance enhancements and security patches. Set your computer to automatically install updates or check for them manually.
  • To check for updates manually, head to Settings > Updates & Security > Windows Update, here you can see all available updates and proceed to install them.

4. Upgrade Your Hardware:

  • Sometimes, a simple hardware upgrade can make a world of difference. Consider adding more RAM or upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD). These upgrades can significantly boost your computer's speed and responsiveness.

5. Run a Full Antivirus Scan:

  • Malware and viruses can take a toll on your computer's performance. Run a thorough antivirus scan to detect and remove any malicious software. A clean system is a fast system!

6. Optimize Your Web Browser:

  • If you spend a lot of time online, your web browser may be contributing to the slowdown. Clear the cache, disable unnecessary extensions, and consider using lightweight browsers for a faster web experience.

7. Adjust Power Settings:

  • Check your power settings and ensure your computer is set to the high-performance mode. This setting maximizes your computer's performance but may consume more power.

8. Utilize Task Manager:

  • Task Manager is your best friend when it comes to identifying resource-hungry applications. Use it to monitor and close unnecessary processes that may be draining your computer's resources.
  • To quickly open task manager, press CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE.

9. Defragment Your Hard Drive:

  • Regularly defragmenting your hard drive helps organize data for faster access. Most modern computers do this automatically, but it's good to check and schedule if needed.

10. Consider Professional Help:

  • If your computer is still struggling despite your best efforts, it might be time to consult the experts. Professional computer maintenance services can diagnose and address underlying issues to ensure optimal performance.
  • We can upgrade, repair, and future proof your computer(s) for amazing prices, call us today on 01273 256786 for your free consultation!
